Gonorrhea Urine Test - More Information
The gonorrhea test, also known as an gonorrhea urine test and a gonorrhea RNA TMA test, checks for a Neisseria gonorrhea urine infection.
Gonorrhea is an infection caused by a bacteria called Neisseria gonorrhea. Sometimes known as the clap, N. gonorrhea is considered a sexually transmitted infection as it is spread by sexual contact with an infected person. Many people with a gonorrhea infection do not have symptoms. Other people with a gonorrhea urine infection have symptoms such as urinary burning, discharge, and pelvic pain.
People get gonorrhea testing for a number of reasons. People who have had sex with an infected person or who have had unprotected sex with multiple partners are at a higher risk of having been infected with N. gonorrhea. Because gonorrhea infections frequently coexist with chlamydia infections, people who are concerned about chlamydia should also think about a possible gonorrhea infection. As a result, the chlamydia test is often recommended with gonorrhea testing which is why concurrent chlamydia and gonorrhea testing is typically done. People who are in new relationships sometimes get gonorrhea testing as part of more comprehensive STD screening through the STD testing panel.
To get a gonorrhea test near you, order online and get tested at the Quest Diagnostics lab that you chose. Once your gonorrhea lab report is ready, it will be available for electronic download. As can be seen on the sample gonorrhea lab results above, a not detected result will be reported if no gonorrhea is detected in the urine. This gonorrhea test uses a transcription-mediated amplification (TMA) methodology to check for the presence of gonorrhea RNA and is sometimes known as a gonorrhea RNA TMA test.
The CDC estimates that there were hundreds of thousands of new gonococcal infections in the United States annually with a majority of them occurring in people 15-24 years of age. The best way to avoid a gonorrhea infection is to abstain from sexual contact with an infected person. Condom use does offer some measure of protection from gonorrhea transmission. Fortunately, gonorrhea infections can usually be treated with antibiotics and typically chlamydia treatment is provided at the same time.
